Today’s Snooker Betting News:
The World Championship is the undoubted highlight of the year for snooker fans and the pinnacle of the game for the players. 32 of the very best performers on the planet bring their cues to the home of snooker, the Crucible theatre in Sheffield, and do battle for over two weeks to decide who is the King of the Baize.
After two years of dominance at the Crucible, Ronnie O’Sullivan is the clear favourite to win sixth world title and his third in as many years. He has competed as and when he wants to on the circuit this season but when he has decided to play, he has been thoroughly impressive with victory at the Masters and the brand new Champion of Champions tournament amongst others.
There is plenty of talent in the field, though, and the likes of Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, Ding Junhui and Judd Trump will all fancy their chances of stifling the Rocket and lifting the trophy themselves this year. For three of those men it would be for the first time, with only Robertson of the chasing pack having prospered in Sheffield in the past.
Snooker betting is different now from the past when often there has been one man who has dominated the scene for a number of years at a time. Ray Reardon did so back in the 1970s, Steve Davis took over from him and was the dominant force in the ‘80s before Stephen Hendry conquered all before him in the 1990s.
Since the turn of the Millennium though there have been some great players, but no one who you would describe as a banker for any tournament they enter. The best indication of this is that when Ronnie O’Sullivan retained his World Championship title this year he became the first man to do so since Stephen Hendry back in 1996 and the first man to reach back-to-back finals since Mark Williams in 2000. The Rocket may be undoubtedly the best player on the planet at the moment but without being committed to play in every tournament then there is no way he can dominate the scene.
This makes the game all the more exciting but betting on tournament winners all the more difficult, however, it is still doable and we here at snookerbetting.co.uk will do our best to talk you through it.
World Championship Snooker Betting
At no point in the year are more bets placed on snooker than during the 17 days of the World Championship and bookmakers make the most of it by being more inventive in their odds than at any other stage in the calendar.
The obvious markets are still available; Match Winner, Handicaps, Total Frames; Total Centuries, but there are much more to take advantage of as well. A popular one with many is the score after just four or six frames. This allows you to make your money early in the game and reinvest in the latter stages when a winner has become clearer.
There are also many more markets available over the course of the tournament with the total number of centuries often a popular, if difficult, one to call. In general the quality of snooker is said to have risen over the years but 2013 saw a sharp drop in the number of centuries scored at the Crucible, what will 2014 bring?
